David McCoy and his Hard Knock Life
Donation protected
The story that I'm about to share surrounds the life of someone I consider family, my friend David McCoy. A talented individual who was trained in carpentry and specialized in custom cabinet making back in the day when custom cabinets were the only option. However he, like many other trade professionals, fell on hard times with the shift in custom home building and upgrades to that of pre-fab materials, Ikea type cheap cabinets in a box, and DIYers.
To compound the loss of his specialized trade, David has struggled to maintain steady employment for the past two decades due to a condition that has taken him years to get properly diagnosed. David suffers from what is known as cluster headaches or Horton's syndrome. These headaches attack at seemingly random times and can last from weeks to several months, rendering him nearly incapacitated. Even though David has been without proper health insurance most of his life, he has spent much out of pocket struggling to get a diagnosis and treatment for his condition. Because he is often afflicted by these headaches that are prolonged, he hasn't been with a W-2 employer since 1994 and has instead relied on handyman-type jobs as a sole means of income.
On top of the health and employment struggles he's endured over the years, David recently had an unexpected health emergency. Just over a month ago, after experiencing acute abdominal pain, David underwent emergency surgery to remove an abdominal abscess, a section of his intestinal tract, and was treated for severe sepsis. It's no joke in claiming that he nearly died. He spent weeks recovering in the hospital and was only recently released. His medical bills are astronomical and he will need yet another surgery to connect his lower intestines back. David has no health insurance.
Sadly, I know this story is probably familiar to a lot of people. And I won't bother getting on a soap box about how universal health care should be a given right. But David will yet again, be unable to work for months and may never be able to return to construction work again. His medical bills are in the tens of thousands.
I've set up this Go Fund Me in a hopeful attempt to raise money for David's medical bills and to supplement his lost income. David needs help. If you or someone you know has the means to help our dear friend out during this time of need, it would mean the world to him and his family. Thank you for your time and attention and let us hope that during these times of struggle, something positive will arise and help David recover.
