Fund Raising Drive for
Proposed remediation of David Ramushu Combined School (Pre-school to G12)
Hello, we are a multidisciplinary team working on lead contamination and pollution on a site in Kabwe, Zambia. We are working on a project to reduce lead contamination at a primary/secondary school and need to raise $15, 000. Lead is a heavy metal that persists in the soil and possess danger to human health. Lead poisoning has been of great concern following the closure of the once world’s largest lead, zinc, and cadmium mines. Kabwe’s Mine neighborhood is heavily contaminated with lead, that has permeated the environment including homes and schools . One of the schools in the area, David Ramushu is among the most contaminated places. This school has classes starting from pre-school to 12th grade. Nine out of eleven air-quality dust samples from the school exceeded the safe standard for indoor lead in dust set by the US EPA. This means that air is a significant pathway of lead exposure at the school. Soil samples showed that both plant available (516.3 ppm) and total lead (1028.9 ppm) exceeded the 400-ppm safe level recommended by the US EPA as a safe limit for children’s play grounds. Soils on a portion of the soccer field had levels of over 6000 ppm, which greatly exceeds the safe limit.
Children at this school are constantly exposed to lead poisoning as they spend majority of their time at school than anywhere else. These children are involved in activities that bring them into direct contact with the contaminated soil such as the school playground, where they spend most of their free time, which unfortunately has no grass or fencing to act as a shield.
Lead exposure continues to be a silent epidemic that has plagued this community and undermines the children’s ability to learn. Schools should be safe environments for children, teachers and staff. This is why we are trying to raise $15, 000 to reduce lead exposure at David Ramushu combined (all pre-college grades) School. We understand that completely eliminating the exposure is not not possible but we can help reduce it. Please consider donating to this cause and help the next generation to live healthy and productive lives.
