I need your help… At 66 years of age, I have never been put in this situation before … Sorry.
In the past year and a half, I have been battling Stage 4 Prostate Cancer. Beginning in late December 2017, my PSA ( Prostate Specific Antigen ) test came back with the very high level of 104 - the number that most men have is under 4.0. So it was of very high concern and I was immediately sent to a Urologist. I was biopsy tested and diagnosed in January of 2018.
Of course, I freaked out and was put on LUPRON a type Hormone Chemo-therapy. LUPRON removes Testosterone from your body so the prostate cancer cannot use it as fuel to grow. I have been on this therapy ever since then and as you can imaging, it changes everything about your life and a man’s health. I now get hot flashes ( I know ladies - “ Join the club “…I hear ya ). I am on meds for osteoporosis, most of my muscle is turning to fat and my veins are weakening so technicians can not find the veins in my arms to take blood for all the ongoing tests. I have also been through 44 treatments of Radiation Therapy ( $80,000 ) and am hopeful that it improves my chances of a longer prognosis… Bone scans, MRI’s and CT scans ( $30,000 ).
In one doctor’s office, my testosterone levels and PSA were being tested again for another round of monthly hormone/chemo therapy. The doctor mentioned that my levels had remained low and therefore I could receive a regular chemo injection. I commented to the doctor, in order to lighten the prospect of another chemo shot… “ I now have the testosterone of a 12 year old boy ”. The doctor, following my try at levity answered,“ No, a 12 year old girl.” It was the first time I found anything about late stage prostate cancer at all funny … I laughed my butt off. It felt great to laugh so hard with my doctor about my health and state of mind !
I do have medicare that helps to cover these costs, but I am accruing my portion of the these bills and I am sinking fast. My only income due to the my health is SOC.SEC. For the first time in my life, I am asking for help so as to not put a burden on those, I owe so much. My “patient responsibility” will amount to about $10,000 which I have not been able to cover for the radiation, CT, MRI and Bone Scans.
So that’s the story! I’ve come to GOFUNDME.COM because I don’t have other forms of support at 66 years of age.
