Team Dave

My brother David Urbaniak, suffers from Primary Lateral Sclerosis, PLS.  Dave lives in River Vale, NJ with his wife, Erin, and children, Nicholas and Sofia.  PLS,   a rare form of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a degenerative motor neuron disease that causes a loss in communication between the brain and the voluntary muscles.   As this disease progresses, every activity of basic living becomes difficult, labor intensive and fatiguing.  It has become a challenge for him to walk, talk, eat and even sleep.  In Dave's words, "I'm confined to a wheel chair most of the time and need assitance doing a lot of everyday tasks."

Therefore as Dave's family, we want to help him in any way we can. We are often asked how he is doing.  We  describe how painful it is to see him struggle, but we also explain that he complains very little, still has a great sense of humor and tries to stay positive. We say that Erin is devoted to her family, working full time, keeping up with the house and children and caring for Dave.  We say that Nick and Sofia are doing well in school and are helpful to Dave with the tasks of daily living. They are both in their exciting teenage years busy with full social lives, class trips, and college applications .
