Hello Everyone!
Thank you for reading Dawaney’s story and what we all can do to help out...
Dawaney Hick’s story started 13 years ago when he was born and it was discovered his hands and some of his ribs were already broken upon birth. How could this be?
Dawaney has inherited “Brittle Bone” disease, medically known as Osteogenesis Imperfecta. It is a genetic condition caused by ineffective or lack of collagen in the bones. This young man has been dealing with repeated surgeries and casts on his limbs since birth or for 13 years now.
We are raising funds for his medical care (please see below), to purchase wheel chairs for land and for use in the sea, prescription drugs, special dietary requirements, support for Nealvey, his grandmother, who raises Dawaney each day, medical travel and lodging, just to name a few of the needs facing Dawaney’s Adventure at all times.
Dawaney lives in the Caribbean on the small island of Nevis about a 1-1/2 hour flight southeast of Puerto Rico. Yet due to the ever present help and the home-front provided by Nealvey, he has received excellent care. *The wonder of Nevis is Dawaney’s ability to access the sea and some of the best possible therapeutic exercise he can get - this is so important! He has become stronger and against the odds is growing into a super smart and capable young man.
Nealvey holds down a very full-time job as an island taxi-van driver with sometimes demanding and odd hours. Yet she finds the time to tend to Dawaney’s special needs always. He has just begun High School at the Nevis International Secondary School where they are able to help him get around. He is an excellent student and has been known to help teachers with projects when he has time. Wherever Dawaney goes he is welcomed and loved almost immediately because of his unusual ability to be bright, full of humor, helpfulness and caring for others. The list goes on...he is an exceptional human despite what he has to face medically everyday!
Upcoming Needs: Several years ago Dawaney underwent surgeries on both legs to insert pins to help prevent the easy breakage of his bones. Despite those measures, sometimes he’s in the hospital every other month with bone breakage or injuries - dealing with it all without complaints. Now that he’s gotten older and has grown, his doctors need to perform further surgery to remove the pins and insert metal rods in his legs that will hopefully lead to Dawaney standing and even be able to walk a bit. That would be amazing! Meanwhile, he will need a larger sport type wheel chair to see him through high school and keep him safe - he has recently taken up archery and is playing basketball - can’t keep this boy down despite it all!
Meanwhile, all this takes funding for medical transport, lodging, food and other incidentals. The government has been helpful to a degree and the actual surgery expense may be covered, however, aftercare and other expenses are up to Nealvey and any help she can muster. This is why we are reaching out to all of you to lend a hand to this most deserving young man and his family.
In advance, we thank you and hope you will join us to gift these fine people who have been stressing to perform miracles for all this.
This is Dawaney receiving the “Dream Chasers Award” - from the Prime Minister of the St. Kitts and Nevis Federation, the Honorable Timothy Harris. This award was given for persistence and bravery which Dawaney certainly has earned!
