Dawn and Jeff’s Cancer Fight
Donation protected
I started this campaign for my mother, Dawn Edgar, and her husband Jeff. Several months ago my mother was let go from her job due to company downsizing. Despite being an exceptionally hard worker, she has struggled to find a job, recently taking a job at a Walgreens so that her and Jeff could make ends meet. At $9 an hour it was hardly enough to cover everyday expenses, including a home mortgage. While they traded vehicles, reduced expenses and attempted to get by on the bare minimums, it was not enough to offset the mounting debt.
Unfortunately, this is only where the story begins! Jeff had been wrestling with stomach pain, back pain and nausea for several months. Despite this fact he continued to work knowing that he was counted on and that medical bills would only further compound their problems. A few weeks ago his pain became too much and my mother took him to the ER. After several tests, the doctor's made the determination that he had liver cancer. Further testing and appointments would later determine that it is in fact Stage 4 liver cancer. Needless to say this news did not come easy and has made a bad situation even worse. Jeff will find out on Tuesday, 23 May whether or not the tumor on his liver is even operable.
In an effort to ease some of the financial burden, they have decided to leave their home and move into an apartment even though they do not have the money to move their stuff. This has forced my mother to have to quit her job at Walgreens and to go work for a temp agency. They are behind several payments on their mortgage and no realtor will help them sell their home because it does not have enough equity. They have over $30,000 in credit card debt and more than $5,000 in loans. They are unable to pay on any of this debt so it continues to grow. They are still trying to keep up payments on their remaining vehicles, but have fallen behind on that as well. The medical bills keep rolling in and they have no money to pay them despite having health insurance which offsets some of the cost. The fear is that they will not be able to get the care necessary for Jeff if they continue to not pay bills.
My mother would never ask for help and is continuing to work, when it comes available, through the temp agency. She is currently commuting over 3 hours to a temp job that pays $12 an hour and has no time to pack up her house for the pending move. She does not even have the money to get boxes to pack up her stuff. Despite having no internet at home she continues to seek employment. In the midst of all of this she has neglected her own health issues as she is not able to afford the medication and treatment she needs. This could lead to some potentially serious health complications for her in the near future. Jeff also has three children of which two he is still providing child support for.
We are rallying as a family to help, but cannot do it alone. I am in the military and not even in the same state as my mother who lives in Texas. For this reason we are turning to friends, extended family, and other caring individuals. Please understand that my mom is very prideful and would never want to burden anyone. My creating and posting this page will be very difficult for her, but sometimes it takes a village. Anything you could spare would go a long way to making a bad situation better. If you cannot donate, please share this link with any and everyone you know.
For administrative purposes and so that everyone donating is aware, I want to explain how the money is being transferred and utilized. The withdraws for donations were setup to go to my bank account. Dawn is my mother and she lives with her husband Jeff in Bertram, TX (moving to apartment in Austin, TX soon). The account is setup to take daily withdraws as donations come in and I transfer the money direct to her account when received so that she can put it to immediate use in handling unpaid bills and medical expenses. Unfortunately, the site will not allow me to add a beneficiary after the fact, therefore I will continue to make withdraws on her behalf. Thanks for reading and hopefully supporting this cause. God Bless.
