Help Shipoopi with medical & living expenses
Donation protected
Legendary climber Steve Schneider, aka Shipoopi, recently fractured his tibia. This unfortunate injury comes soon after he'd completed his 130th El Cap ascent (of those laps, 50 of them are separate lines, so he has a pretty varied el Cap resume). Steve recently got out of the hospital after getting a bunch of metal put in his leg. He remains positive and is weaning himself off the nasty pain meds, but he still has a long recovery ahead of him. The doctors told him it would probably take a year to recover fully. Although he has good health insurance, he could use some financial help to cover the cost-of-living expenses.
Steve is a good friend and neighbor, and I was bummed for him because he was just getting fit again after a brutal ruptured appendix last year.
Here’s a link to a recent Enormocast that features Steve narrating his impressive climbing career. Steve became a YOSAR member and Valley resident in the early 80s and never looked back. Under the tutelage of John Bachar, Steve racked up hard free pitches all over Yosemite, El Cap, and Tuolumne Meadows, including what was likely the first 5.14 in Tuolumne. Then he turned his sights to Patagonia with audacious routes and solos in the Paine region. Also a pioneer speed climber, Steve did the first one-day solo of the Nose of El Cap and was the first to do three El Cap routes in a day with Hans Florine. Not done yet, Steve continues to seek out new-for-him ground on El Cap whenever he can. Even in his 60s, he’s still the most psyched and restless climber around. https://enormocast.com/2021/10/enormocast-229-steve-shipoopoi-schneider-blonde-ambition/
Unfortunately, Steve was just about to start a new electrician job, but he won't be able to work for a while. Steve would really appreciate a little help from the community, and even a call or visit would be welcomed. Thanks for pitching in!
