Frustrated and failing, a student turned to his teacher and complained that passing his class would be impossible. The teacher’s response: I only see the possible.
David Carl Guastella was the teacher and he saw the possible in all of his students, no matter their circumstance. When David unexpectedly passed away in January 2019, his students, friends and family were in shock.
A creative person, David spent years performing on the Chicago comedy circuit while also developing a regular podcast. He was a dedicated high school special education teacher, devoted husband to Mary and loving father to his daughter Sophia. David was a graduate of the University of Michigan and earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Toledo. Fluent in Chinese, he spent about two years living in various parts of Asia teaching English and attending college. He was passionate about education and recognized that it made the impossible, possible, for everyone trying to make their dreams a reality.
The David Carl Guastella Scholarship Fund has been set up to honor David’s legacy. Recently, over thirty students from ITW David Speer Academy applied for the 2020 scholarship. Applicants were required to write about their inspirations, creativity, and perseverance. Qualities that David valued and exemplified. With the generous donations in just one year, five of those students have been awarded $2,500 each to go towards their educational dreams. Many of these students will be the first ones in their families to attend college or trade school.
To continue our efforts to sustain this valuable scholarship, David’s father (Dave Guastella), along with a couple of his friends (Bob Mills and John Balint), will participate in and are seeking support for a three-day, 300-mile bike ride fundraiser from Canton, Michigan to the ITW David Speer Academy in Chicago on June 4th - 6th. This is a symbolic route beginning where David grew up and ending at the place where he taught and the community he loved so much. The David Carl Guastella Scholarship Fund is now a registered 501(c)3 organization.
Please know that David’s friends and family are humbled by the outpouring of love and amazing generosity by each donor and we cannot thank you enough. May God bless each one of you. When you donate to the scholarship, you are making a difference and like David, you see only the possible.
