De Leon Family in Lahaina, Maui

For those of you that know me, Maui is very special in my life. My family and I have visited Maui countless times. About 20 years ago I met an amazing friend, Justin, and soon met his family. Justin and his family are born and raised in Lahaina. Justin's wife, Harmony genealogy dates back hundreds of years to Lahaina. Justin works at a Hotel, and Harmony used to be a Hula dancer. Justin has also been farming and taking care of sacred land in Maui. Justin and Harmony have 4 amazing children and 1 grandchild. On every trip, we get together and have a cook-out and just enjoy each other's company.

On August 8th as we all know, Lahaina was engulfed in flames. The De Leon family had to quickly evacuate their family home and left with nothing but the clothes they had on. The De Leon home housed their entire family. The De Leon home was not spared and was nothing but ashes when Justin returned to his property. Justin and his family have lost EVERYTHING that was in their house. They are lucky enough to be alive and staying with family in another part of the island. I have spoken with Justin several times and what he says they have not lost is the love they have for one another and for their Island. As tough as it may seem, Justin and his family have that very Hawaiian attitude that everything is going to be ok.

It pains me to not be able to be there and help. The De Leon family now has to go through the process of rebuilding their home. They are going to have to start all over. I can not imagine what they must be going through.
