Deaf History at Dundurn Castle
Donation protected
I am helping Ontario Deaf Foundation (ODF) to raise the needed $5,000 for an Ontario government historical plaque to be installed on the property of Dundurn Castle, Hamilton, ON. This site was the home of the second and last private school for the Deaf (1866-1869) before the provincial government opened the publicly-funded school for the Deaf in Belleville, ON, in 1870.
WHY AN HISTORICAL PLAQUE?
• Dundurn Castle was home to the second and last private school for the Deaf before the provincial government took over the education of Deaf children.
• This aspect of Deaf history is unknown to most Ontarians and Hamiltonians.
• ODF and the Hamilton Deaf community want to pay homage to Deaf history.
All funds collected here will be given to the Ontario Deaf Foundation for this purpose.
