Dear Friends and Family,
As some of you may know, the Deaver family experienced a tragic accident last Friday night, 11/18/16. Shawn and Jennifer’s son, Mick, attends high school and plays hockey in Boston. While at a tournament in New Jersey over the weekend, Mick had a collision with a player on the opposite team. As Shawn said, I’ve seen this hit a million times, and 99% of the time it’s ok. But this time it wasn’t. Shawn and Jennifer watch all of Mick’s games by live internet feed. They saw the accident happen and watched as Mick lie on the ice for 30 minutes as medical personnel attended to him. I can’t even imagine the pain of feeling so helpless while you are hundreds of miles away and unable to help your child.
Mick was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brusnwick, New Jersey, and is currently in pediatric ICU. Mick has damage to the C5 vertebrate. As of today (11/21), Mick has feeling in his lower extremities, but cannot move his legs or feet. He is able to move his upper arms. He is conscious and able to speak. Mick had surgery Sunday morning, and is scheduled to have a second surgery on Tuesday.
This is all so new, that there is not much more information available yet. Mick is expected to be at the New Jersey hospital at least four weeks before he will be transported. It is too early to know what feeling and movement he will regain. We are all hopeful and prayerful that Mick makes a full recovery and gets his butt back on the ice asap!
The Deaver family will experience much stress as the holidays approach. The Deaver clan is together in New Jersey for Thanksgiving. Jennifer and Mary will head back to Columbia early next week. Shawn will stay with Mick until he’s ready to come home. The hospital has provided housing for Shawn and Jennifer at the local Ronald McDonald house. Shawn is actually considering getting a job while in New Jersey so he can continue to help support the family in some capacity.
Undoubtedly, the physical, emotional, and financial stress will be a huge burden on this awesome family. Let’s all show our support, first in prayer, and second in giving. This is something that we, as parents, have nightmares about. Let’s all help make this road to recovery as quickly and painlessly as possible.
We thank you in advance for any and all contributions. Please give what you can and share with your friends and family. No amount is too small! Shawn and Jennifer have promised to keep us updated, so we will make updates on this site as information arrives.
With Deepest Thanks
