Debbie Mullis Recent Amputee rt.leg
SuperBowl Sunday was filled with excitement but instead of enjoying the game and festivities,I spent the day in the ER with terrible pain in my right leg and hardly being able to walk. Soon I was transferred to another hospital to be seen the next day by an orthopedic surgeon. After numerous tests, the doctor came in to discuss my situation. He explained that I had an acute infection in my right leg that was unable to be treated by antibiotics. My only option to save my life was a below the knee amputation of the right leg. It was at that moment my world turned upside. Since there was no other option, the surgery was done the following day. I went to a Rehabilitation facility after my hospital stay. I am doing well in therapy but my insurance benefits will run out as of 4/20/17. At this point I have no place to go. My current apartment is not handicap accessible so I will have to move. If I decide to stay as a private patient it will cost $265.00 per day and it would have to be paid upfront which I cannot afford. Therapy is not covered in that fee. It would be billed to me directly. Once fitted with my prosthesis I will need to modify my current vehicle or purchase a handicap vehicle already modified at the factory. Expenses have risen beyond my available means. Not only do I have numerous medical bills, I will need to have a home care aid to assist with daily living things that will not be covered by insurance until I am more independent and not confined to the wheelchair. I need to have a hospital bed that is different than the one covered by insurance. Since I am unable to transfer in a car yet, I will need medical transport every time I have an appointment etc. Which adds to the expenses. My needs will change constantly. Maintenance to my wheelchair, adjustments to the prosthesis and the other equipment needed are just a few. I have previous medical bills which have all gone to collections. I know this is an.awesome program. I have donated to previous campaigns and hope you will find it in your heart to do the same.
