Debora's Stroke: A Call for Help
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Kelly Bennett (Jett) and my beautiful mother, Debora Jett, suffered a stroke 3 days ago. She has been hospitalized and admitted to ECU Hospital in Edenton, North Carolina. She has several blood clots and dead areas in the optical lobe of her brain, which is what controls her eyes and vision. She got worse overnight last night (01/07/2025) and is completely blind right now and will not be coming home for a little while. They found more patchy spots on her brain and some dead smaller blood vessels in the last CT scan and MRI. We are not sure how long she will have to stay and are just taking it day by day. When she is able to come home, she will need 24/7 care and an in-home nurse. Her medical bills are piling up, and her insurance is not covering much at all.
On top of all the medical bills, she will need major renovations done to her home as it is not livable for her, and she will have to have extensive rehabilitation as well to teach her brain and body how to do everything again. They think this will be her new normal, unfortunately, meaning she may not recover fully. While we are praying every day it improves, we just want to try and be prepared for if it does not. Her home has no septic tank at all, no running water in the kitchen, and no flushing toilet. I believe it will end up being condemned if home health comes there to inspect and do a home plan because it is a major health hazard and concern due to mold in the walls and the septic issues and waste (feces) in the yard.
We are asking for help to try and renovate her home if we are not able to find anywhere else. My husband and I are working on trying to find a home that will be big enough for us, her, and all of our animals as we live in a one-bedroom apartment right now, so we have no room either. We had already been looking into buying a property prior to this, so it is our hope that we can obtain some help with a down payment for the property we are looking at because renting is almost impossible with all the animals my mother and my husband have. They are like my mother's children, and some she has had for 13+ years and are one of the few things that have kept her going, so it would be very devastating to her if she had to rehome them. They are senior animals, and one is even her registered emotional support animal as well. We want to get into a property and move my mother in with us and get a nurse that can be there as well while my husband and I work different shifts so one of us can be there most of the time since she requires 24/7 care.
This is all very stressful to her because 3 days ago she was functioning all by herself and was even working as a line cook at almost 64 years old and was great at her job. It's a big adjustment, to say the least, and a lot to get used to. I will be uploading pictures of her living situation over the next few days as well as her medical documents. We just ask that anybody who is able to help to please donate, whether it be towards her medical bills and rehabilitation or towards the cost of the new home and renovations. We will appreciate anything at this point, and thank you all so much. If anybody has any questions, please contact Kelly Bennett. I'm her daughter and her emergency contact, etc.
