UPDATE: From Paul and Crystal

Crystal was moved from the ICU two weeks ago to the medical floor after being in the ICU for 4 months. We are waiting for a spot in rehab. Thanks again to all the community, friends and family for your help and support through these times.

On Dec 17th/2023 after having what seemed like flu like symptoms Crystal became critically ill and was rushed by ambulance to the Deep River and District Hospital. Upon evaluation it was determined that she needed to be transported to the ICU at the Ottawa Civic Hospital where she remains to this day. By the time she reached the hospital her body had started to shut down. She was in critical condition. It was determined that she had a large blood clot on her lung which required surgery, and her kidneys were failing. She was placed on dialysis. She is no longer on dialysis as re regained function of her kidneys. She was also placed on a ventilator that she has recently almost completely been able to go without. She has worked so hard to breathe on her own. Crystal also developed a Sepsis infection that tore through her body. She had 7 surgeries in about 10 days to try and get the infection under control. Thanks to the amazing Doctors and Nurses Crystal managed to stabilize, but unfortunately the infection that ravaged her body did a lot of damage. On Feb 29th Crystal had to undergo amputation of both legs above the knee. Paul has not left her side other than to return home 1 day a week to spend the day/night with the kids. He has been renting an apartment beside the Civic Hospital so he can be there every day with Crystal. This also gives him a place for the kids to come and visit for a few days. Riley and Chloe have spent numerous days in Ottawa with Paul and Crystal but Vinnie has yet to see his mom. He remains in the care of his Nana and Poppa Fischer where Riley is also staying. Chloe is staying with Crystal's family. Crystal is a true warrior and although she will need more surgeries she is determined to get home ASAP. She will be spending a few more moths in the hospital before she can start her rehabilitation. They are very proud and independent people and did not want to ask for help, but so many people have reached out to us and we wanted to use this platform to make it easier for those who want to help. They are SO appreciative of all the support and donations they have received and want to thank everyone for their generosity! Thank you for all your support!!!
