Decentralised Plastic Recycling in Iraq
Donation protected
Dear Fundraising Community,
We are Owen, 24 years old from Scotland and Dominic, 26 years old from Germany. Having met through voluntary work on the Greek island of Chios, we have decided to implement a project together, with our partner NGO https://nwe-halabja.org/, which aims to set up a self sustaining plastic recycling centre with a focus on youth education in the city of Halabja, South Kurdistan. We will engage with the community to create a system for the collection and sorting of respective plastic types and colours. A plastic shredder shall then be constructed on each site using locally sourced components based on schematics from https://preciousplastic.com/ (worth a look!) which reduces plastic waste into granulate flakes. These flakes will then be melted down and moulded into new, durable products useful to locals using extrusion and sheet press production plants to achieve this.

Project content overview:
Central to the implementation of this project will be the engagement of a balanced ratio of men and women of all ages and ethnicities. Everybody is welcome!
The core goals of our project are:
- To install an effective system for the recycling of plastic waste and to create useful products from this resource
- To establish a space which is conducive to the transfer of knowledge in the field of engineering
- To reduce pollution in the form of plastic waste and to increase environmental awareness in the community
- For the the recycling plants to be self financing, once established, with the potential to be upscaled in the future
Each recycling centre consists of a shredder which costs €1500 and a production plant which costs €1000 (this price is estimated as accurately as possible, we are not buying pre-assembled machinery so there could be slightly different costs depending on the different site’s requirements.) We calculate maintenance tools to cost €300 per recycling centre and we will make sure and provide appropriate PPE for anyone involved in the project. The more money that we can raise through this fundraiser the more recycling centres we can help to build and upgrade for the community in Kurdistan :)
