Declan’s Story
Declan Maloney is a 13 year old 8th grader from St James Middle School. Declan has many pursuits and passions that he continues to strive for by fighting EPITHELIOID SARCOMA. He was recently diagnosed on 11/30 /2018 after having what the physicians thought was a routine surgery to remove a mass from his right arm. His journey since then has involved quite frequently trips to MUSC, Emory in Atlanta, Shriners in Greenville, and CMC in Charlotte.
This SARCOMA CANCER is very rare, starting as a slow growing mass, mimicking Ganglion Cysts. It occurs more commonly in upper extremity and in males. First line treatment is surgery and possible amputation. If there are metastasis or reoccurrence radiation and chemotherapy enter the treatment plan as well.
Declan’s family (John, Allison, and his older brother Finnbar) moved to Murrells Inlet from the New Jersey Shore 3 years ago. Both Maloney boys are active in Belin Youth Group, Boy Scout Troop 396 out of Belin, and attend St James Middle & High Schools. Declan is a member of the St James High School Marching Band playing Baritone.
He also played Tuba and keyboards. He is very enthusiastic about music and wants to continue after the amputation.
Declan’s goal is to become a GAMECOCK and get a scholarship for the USC Marching Band. Declan is an avid reader and is particularly fond of the Hobbit series and history concerning Civil War, WWI and WWII. His favorite subjects are math, science and history. Declan is also a FANATIC about Star WARS. Many happy memories are
shared with his dad introduced his fondness of STAR WARS to his sons. One of his favorite Star Wars items is the Darth Vader case with figures that his dad had as a child.
All prayer and monetary assistance to the Maloney’s in this arduous journey is greatly appreciated! Funds collected will help offset expenses for medical, travel, living, and prosthetic needs. Declan will be having different prosthetics throughout this journey. Ultimately, his family would like him to be able to have a BIONIC HAND so his new normal will be positive and productive.
