Declan Carter, a remarkable 12-year-old boy with a heart full of courage and kindness, tragically passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024, during a field trip to Howell Nature Center with his 6th-grade class. His story touched hearts far and wide, deeply impacting our community and reminding us of the profound legacy he leaves behind.
Declan, the beloved son of John and Liz, and brother to Ainslie (14) and Georgia (8), was more than just an extraordinary athlete—he was a beacon of light. A fierce competitor with the heart of a lion and the gentleness of a lamb, Declan had just tied the OLV All-time school record days before his passing. His talent shone on the national stage, competing in the Cross Country National Championships for three consecutive years and also in the Junior Olympics. His athleticism earned him respect far beyond his years, but it was his leadership and compassion that truly set him apart.
At just 12, Declan embodied the spirit of a leader. Whether on the playground or with his school teams, he led with kindness, bringing joy and inspiration to everyone around him. His bright smile and generous heart touched lives wherever he went, reminding us all of what it means to care for others.
Declan's family has a rich legacy of community service. His father, John, serves on the Northville City Council, and his mother, Liz, is actively involved in the Main Street League, a charitable foundation. Declan shared their passion for community, with a special connection to downtown Northville and Ford Field, where he was known for his Saturday runs along what is now fondly called “Declan’s Route.”
In honor of his incredible impact, a bronze statue will be erected along “Declan’s Route,” a testament to the lasting legacy of this young legend. As his favorite quote (TOP OF THIS PAGE) from *The Sandlot* so perfectly captures: “Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.” Declan's spirit will continue to inspire, his story written into the hearts of all who knew him.
The days following his passing, flags in Northville flew at half-staff in his honor, and local churches held special services in his memory. The community continues to come together to support the Carter family in their time of need. Declan was airlifted from the scene and underwent emergency surgery at UM Mott Children’s Hospital, leading to significant medical expenses. Your support in this difficult time will not only help the family but ensure that Declan’s "legacy status" lives on forever.
Though Declan is no longer with us, his memory will never fade. His legend, like those who leave an indelible mark on this world, will never die. Thank you for helping to carry his light forward.
