Molly’s Story

For anyone that knows Molly will know her as the outgoing, happy, super sporty and friendly 23-year-old who loves her family and friends but probably sports more.

Molly plays most sports with her friends from NDSSG. She was super fit and active, but on Monday 8th January 2024 all that changed when Molly suffered a cardiac arrest completely out of the blue whilst playing hockey. Without the quick action from the hockey clubs’ volunteers, whom I will forever be indebted to, our story would have been so different.

Molly is one of the lucky ones if you can say that! She survived whereas approximately 90% of young people who suffer Sudden Adult Cardiac Arrest Syndrome are less fortunate. Molly’s cardiac arrest happened in the right place at the right time. Luckily the volunteer was a medical student, additionally there was a defibrillator onsite at Beeston Flyerz hockey club. Had this happened at one of Molly’s other clubs our story would have been so different. Luckily Molly is here to share her story of survival and wants to help her club and friends at Monty Hind raise funding if another young person suffers the same. This centre would benefit from having a defibrillator fitted and staff training as the young people here have many disabilities and medical conditions.

For us, Molly’s life has changed. She has had an internal defibrillator fitted which should hopefully let her return to doing sports which she loves and lead as normal a life as possible. This device is there to help her do that, but I will always worry about Molly more now when she returns to doing the things she loves.
