Delceppo Family Medical Expense Relief

Donation protected
To all of our family and friends—most of you are aware that very early morning on May 18, 2022 we discovered my mama, Brenda Delceppo, in her home with a severely altered mental status and unable to move. Once paramedics were called, she was transported to Vidant Duplin where testing revealed that her neck was broken and that she was paralyzed. Later that day she was transported to Vidant Greenville via EastCare. The neurosurgeon that read her CT’s needed further extensive testing to determine the extent of all of her spinal injuries. C5 was re-broken (previously broken in 2003 in a car accident), C-6 and C-7 were also crushed and her spinal cord compressed so badly that it was nearly severed, along with hairline fracture in her right scapula and humerus—along with other bad bruising, scrapes and cuts.

Surgery to repair her spinal cord, C-5 thru C-7, 2 nerve bundles that were damaged during the incident along with repaired muscle and tendon tissues. Mama was in bad shape for a few days there, the worst and most critical within the first four days. She was kept in ICU for 9 days to receive one on one care and recovery. It was determined after surgery that the spinal cord and nerve repair, along with the vertebrae, was successful. Her neurosurgeon has stated that she would regain full mobility at least at the level of what she had before she was injured. She has been a literal walking miracle.

Mama was discharged from Vidant Greenville on May 27, 2022. My dad, Todd Delceppo, who is a long distance truck driver, was able to take off of work to be in Greenville for Mama’s surgery and to help me be there for her.

On Memorial Day, very early morning, my dad called me in excruciating pain. He’d been helping mama get settled that morning and a hernia that he’s had for about 20 years ruptured causing a portion of his small intestine to die. He was taken to UNC Wayne where doctor’s determined that he would need emergency surgery where they removed several inches of his small intestine and repaired the hernia. He was discharged on May 31, 2022 and was re-admitted on June 1, 2022 due to complications. Dad was finally discharged on June 3 and has been home recovering since. His surgeon did find that dad has multiple hernias, and it’s possible that they will need to be repaired before he’ll be able to return to normal day to day life…and most importantly work.

Unfortunately my dad is the sole income in their home and he will be out of work until at the very least early August—with no income of any kind coming in in the time between.

While Mama is still recovering, it’s been determined that she actually will need physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy (to correct a speech impediment caused by her injuries)—as well as continued multiple weekly trips back to Greenville for re-checks, nerve testing and appointments with the other specialists that are helping to treat her. The mounting medical bills have reached far over $350,000 (not including my dad’s) to date and will continue to climb while she is receiving medical care.

Medical care for my mama is anticipated to last for several months—as well as needs for medical supplies, prescriptions and accommodations that need to be made to their home to accommodate her mobility now and into the distant future, and traveling expenses continue to climb as we travel back and forth for both of their medical visits. All the while, monthly bills are still there too.

While my parents absolutely do not like the idea of asking for help, I’m insisting that they do it. They cannot afford to continue day to day life, let alone a specialist’s office visit fee, or the multiple tanks of gas required to travel for doctors without financial help of some kind.

Unfortunately, the owners of the property where she was injured (it did not occur at my parents home) are refusing to cooperate with insurance companies to help get some of these expenses covered and financial relief for my parents. All that I can add to this is that an investigation with our local sheriff’s department began while Mama was still at Vidant Greenville—at this time we are unable to add any more information or give any more details.

My hope is that we can raise enough funds to aid in paying household bills, travel expenses and medical expenses for both of my parents until my dad is able to return to work sometime in August.

Thank you for any and all help, whether it be donation, checking on her or offering help of any kind, and especially thank you for all of the prayers that everyone has sent their way. Please keep those prayers coming even if donation isn’t an option. The prayers are just as important and have been vital to both of my parents recovering.
