Support Black Midwives: Deliver Us
Donation protected
Black mothers are dying in childbirth at staggering rates. While the hospital establishment continues to fail them, Black midwives around the country are fighting back, opening birth centers and demanding justice for Black mothers. Deliver Us follows four visionary Black midwives in Los Angeles, Gainesville, and Chicago as they battle to change laws, leverage social media to raise awareness and force change, and protect mothers' lives while delivering babies.
From producer/directors Jenny Callaghan and Randi Matthews, producers Ryan Gielen and Patrick James Lynch, with the support of executive producer and TV host, Egypt Sherrod, Deliver Us needs your support to complete post-production and help change the world for Black mothers to be.
The Crisis:
Our healthcare system is the most expensive in the industrialized world, yet the most deadly for new mothers. Within this broken system, Black mothers die at three times the rate of White and Hispanic mothers. A Black mother with a college education is at 60 percent greater risk of maternal death than a white or Hispanic woman with less than a high school education.
Taking Action:
Deliver Us sheds light on this crisis and its potential solutions. We embark on the journey with four pioneers: midwives Kimberly Durdin and Allegra Hill, who own and operate the only Black-owned, midwife-led birthing center in Los Angeles, Kindred Space LA; Jeanine Valrie Logan, who spearheaded legislative changes and raised funds to establish the Chicago South Side Birth Center; and Dr. Stephanie Mitchell, also known as "Doctor Midwife," a social media influencer, midwife, and doctor of nursing. Dr. Mitchell is tackling legislation and funding obstacles to open Birth Sanctuary Gainesville in Alabama, a state plagued by some of the nation's worst maternal health statistics.
Our documentary captures their efforts to raise money, educate the public, and support expectant moms of color. We hear horrifying stories of the systematized dismissal of Black women’s pain and agency, tracing the current crisis back to the cruel and monstrous experiments of "The Father of Modern Gynecology," J Marion Sims, who experimented on enslaved Black bodies without anesthesia.
Hope for the Future:
While this is an incredibly complex and deeply rooted problem within the United States, Deliver Us presents accessible Black midwifery care as a powerful and immediate vehicle for change. Through our film, viewers can get involved and make a difference so that Black mothers will no longer have to fear death after creating life.
Your support is crucial in bringing this important story to the screen. Together, let's amplify the voices of Black midwives and demand justice for Black mothers. When care improves for the most marginalized communities, it improves for everyone. This narrative is infused with hope.
