MY SON.
My only child, Michael (31) is an adult with special needs. Michael is my world and I have happily devoted the last three decades to raising Michael to love the Lord and to be empowered to live an independent, full, productive, and satisfying life. This has meant investing extensive time, effort, and resources to faithfully engage Michael cognitively, physically, socially, educationally, and spiritually. There was no greater reward for me as a mother than to see Michael thrive as he now lives happily and successfully at an independent adult special needs apartment complex with full services and support. He is involved with his local community and friends, has a rewarding job, and continues to enthusiastically learn new skills to be self-supporting.

Unfortunately, the life that Michael has worked so very hard to achieve is now being challenged.
Michael’s civil rights, independence, and innocence are being put to the test through litigation that I have been fighting on his behalf for over a year.
This litigation aims to reclassify Michael as an “incapacitated person”.
It aims to dispossess Michael of 'some' or 'all' of his civil rights; and, unless safeguards are put into place, his living community and his treasured environment are at risk.
I have devoted my life to raising Michael and I am willingly sacrificing all of my resources to defend him in this lawsuit.

I am counting on His promises to never leave or forsake us and to supply all of our needs. Please pray that Michael be allowed to retain his civil rights, his independence, and his innocence through a Supported Decision-Making Agreement. Please pray that if the Court insists on a guardian being named, that the Court names me as Michael’s full legal guardian, to ensure that Michael is not uprooted from the environment and predictable work, exercise, therapy, and social routine he thrives on.
Please pray that safeguards are put in place to guarantee Michael can remain in his current state and country of residency and at his independent adult living community, a special needs apartment complex where he has resided for the past 6 years with his community of friends.
Please pray for Michael and for me as we navigate this difficult journey, involving complicated and expensive legal actions.

It is more difficult for me to make this second request, as it is an appeal for financial support. I have been a single mother since shortly after Michael’s birth and have very limited income. I have now fully exhausted all of my finances. My family has lovingly come alongside me and has done more than I could have asked over the years, but they too do not have additional resources to offer. I currently owe $30,269.26 to my attorney. At the beginning of January 2020 there were additive fees, penalties, and costs for the Court’s attorneys, specialists, and experts, compounding the debt I already bear.

MICHAEL'S LIFE / OUR LIFE.
I’m a single mom with an amazing adult son who I love more than my own life. We have lived an uncomplicated, unadorned life. Simple pleasures, like driving down the Garden State Parkway in the summer with the windows down, Michael with his sunglasses on, me in my aviators, and laughing all the way, are what makes us happiest. I get such of a thrill by being in Michael’s company, as do others whose lives Michael has touched! The biggest thrill of all is seeing him living independently, successfully and happily!
Michael has worked so hard to succeed and accomplish to where he is today-living independently, with supports and services, these past 6 years.
Michael's enthusiastic appreciation in attending Sunday School and church where he has learned to love the Lord and lean on Him.
Michael practices the principles of the Bible in his life every day.
Michael has taken and continues to take physical, occupational, and speech therapies.
Michael is a loving, kind person, who is ready to defend and stand up for his friends.
Michael always tries his best at all he does.
Our motto is "Don't say you can't, at least try it once."
Michael attends summer camp, where he enjoys developing new relationships with the campers and counsellors while he is enjoying ziplining, cookouts, arts & crafts, fishing, and canoeing.
Michael thoroughly enjoys the many friends that he has made over the years. Michael is a loyal companion, who truly cares and will always stop to say hi.
Michael is engaging with a sunny smile and a consistently bright outlook on life.
Michael looks only for the best in people.
Michael is totally comfortable being in front of a crowd, whether it be singing karaoke, participating in a county-wide fashion show, or being on stage assisting the magician!
Michael has an artistic flare and paints creatively with a modern flare and an exact eye for colors!
Michael loves sports and continues to participate in Special Olympics.
Michael's favorite teams are the Mets, Jets, and the Nets, much to the chagrin of his uncles, and his roommate, who are Yankee fans! They blame me, not Michael, as the turncoat!
Michael will always try his best. While working as a bagger at ShopRite, his manager had said he was so impressed by Michael's great customer service skills with the shoppers.
Michael never has a mean word to say about anyone.
He remembers everyone's birthday, and you can expect a call from Michael every year singing Happy Birthday to you!
I am a proud parent because Michael has worked so hard his whole life to overcome the obstacles that he was born with to now be living independently.
