Restore the Floor Project

~ In memory of longtime Eastpointer, Denise Szykula-Giordano, dancer, choreographer, innovator, and Eastpointe Memorial Library trustee for 15 years ~

For generations the hardwood floor of Halfway Schoolhouse has supported the dreams and aspirations of the Eastpointe community, connecting us through its roots in the natural world to the strength of its origins and to each other. Now, after a lifetime of service, it’s our turn to return the favor.

A dedicated group of admirers of Eastpointe’s historic Halfway Schoolhouse have come together to raise much needed funds to restore the functionality and beauty of its original floor so it can continue to serve the community for years to come. A beloved resource listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Halfway Schoolhouse has provided a welcoming space for dance instruction, yoga, weddings and baby showers, historical re-enactments and other activities.

The Restore the Floor Project is raising $7000 in the name of an Eastpointe treasure, choreographer and teacher Denise Szykula-Giordano. Denise (4/4/1946 – 6/9/2020) was a respected lifelong resident of Eastpointe, and a graduate of East Detroit High School who also served as a trustee of The Eastpointe Memorial Library for fifteen years. Szykula won praise over many decades for her contributions as a dancer, choreographer and innovator. Denise, founder of Nonce Dance Ensemble, later renamed Dance Nonce, served as the company’s artistic director and choreographer for over 45 years.

Denise taught dance classes at Halfway Schoolhouse and was aware that the floor was at the end of its useful life, posing a threat to dancers and anyone else using the facility. To continue Denise’s legacy, the funds will be used to refurbish the now unusable surface.  Said project to be completed in October by Hill’s Hardwood, hillshardwood.com.

If you are a member of the dance community or simply a lover of dance, a member of Eastpointe’s extended family, a friend of the Eastpointe Memorial Library, affiliated with the Grosse Pointe Academy, a history buff or friend, colleague or student of Denise Szykula – Giordano, please consider donating to this worthy cause.
