Denise's 60th Birthday, 60 Mile Challenge
Donation protected
When Denise found out she wouldn’t be able to spend her 60th birthday in the Cotswolds with her loved ones as planned, she decided not to get down about it, but instead turn her lockdown celebrations into something positive for the community she has been proud to be part of for all of her 60 wonderful years.
The Coronavirus in the UK has resulted in many who were already vulnerable, being unable to afford food and essentials most of us take for granted. Therefore, Denise decided to set herself a challenge to see what she could do to help get those essentials to those in need in Garstang and its surrounding areas.
While racking our brains on how we could achieve this, we suddenly realised there were some fantastic people just across the road already doing exactly the same thing. The brilliant Heather Brandwood and the team at The Bellflower have set up the Garstang Vulnerable People Fund, taking food donations at the pub and raising huge sums of money to then put back into feeding and creating care packages for the most vulnerable within the community
Denise has therefore made it her mission to raise as much money as she can for The Bellflower’s fund by RUNNING 60 MILES over the course of the week her birthday falls on.
Starting on Sunday 17th May, Denise, her partner Tony and myself, her eldest son Ross (who will be completing the challenge separately in areas surrounding my home in Manchester) will complete a series of runs totalling 60 miles, with the final run taking place on Saturday 23rd May.
This challenge is no mean feat. Each of us will be running 60 miles over seven days. Marathon runners train up to a maximum of 40-50 miles per week during their training, so 60 miles really is something of a challenge. Especially for a 60-year-old (Sorry Mum!). We’re not asking for much. In fact, if you yourselves have been financially affected by the Coronavirus outbreak, then we do not want you to donate. Times are hard for a lot of people right now. But if you can afford it, or if you can afford to donate £5 to this instead of buying that bottle of wine this week, then please do so and help Denise give her bit back to the community she loves, by donating to The Bellflower’s great work.
Although The Bellflower have their own GoFundMe page, we have decided to create our own page, purely to track how much Denise can raise for the cause. All proceeds raised on this page will be donated to Garstang Vulnerable People Fund - Coronavirus Aid, set up by Heather, at the end of Denise’s challenge.
Finally, one request from Denise – If you see her running between the dates of Sunday 17th and Saturday 23rd May, then give her a wave or a honk of the horn to let her know your supporting her and to spur her on! Especially on TUESDAY 19TH MAY - her 60th Birthday. She’ll be the one wearing the sash!
On behalf of Denise, thanks for taking the time to read and thanks in advance of any kind donations.
Stay safe and keep smiling x
