Dennis Askew UGA Sousaphone Scholarship

On Thursday January 28, 2021 I learned of my dear friend Dennis Askew had passed away suddenly. As many of my friends, I was stunned! My heart aches for Kim, the kids and the entire UGA band family on hearing of this news. I consider Dennis to be my brother - as many of us do.
Dennis and I met in the summer of 1981 at Brevard Music camp, living in the same bunk house. We spent many days together that summer and became close friends. We saw each other the next year as Seniors through All-State and other events but really developed our life long friendship in the fall of 1982 at UGA band camp. We both attended University of Georgia and played in the marching band. For the next 5 years, we created so many memories - I would considered these to be some of the best memories of my life. Dennis was a big part of that - as were many other friends that we developed along the way.
Dennis was encouraging and lifting others up, always with that infectious smile of his. He was a terrific tubist, but I would dare say that our best memories would come from being in the Marching band. Too many to recount here but many of you will have those same thoughts and feelings, I am sure.
He always was giving of himself to help others, becoming section leader and Band Captain. He never said no. Even beyond our days at UGA, he continued to give those efforts in to helping others.
Today, I could not think of a more fitting way to honor my dear friend than to establish a Scholarship fund in his name: Dennis Askew UGA Sousaphone Scholarship Fund. This would be legacy that would continue to give a $1000 scholarship to a deserving Sousaphone player in the UGA marching band. I hope that you will join me in reaching our goal that will give for many years to come and help others to remember that it means more to give than to receive. Dennis gave me a lot more than I gave back, and one day we will be playing Glory, Glory again together soon.
