Derby Days is a unique Sigma Chi tradition that allows the brotherhood to support charities that they feel are important and impactful. With the recent passing of Brother Matthew Lawrence Friedman, this year's Derby Days will carry a special significance.
In honor of Matthew, we will be donating 70% of the proceeds collected from this week-long charity event to The Matthew Friedman Memorial Foundation for Brain Research. The foundation was created to honor Matt’s life and highlight his passion for medicine. The proceeds will go towards brain research in Matthew’s name.
The remainder of the proceeds will be split, 10% to the sorority that "wins" Derby Days to donate to a charity of their choosing and 20% to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation (HCF). The Huntsman Foundation's mission is to guarantee the future of cutting-edge research at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). In December 2012, Sigma Chi designated the HCF as its sole preferred philanthropic partner. Last year alone the Sigma Chi Fraternity raised over $1.9 million and dedicated the Sigma Chi Friendship Garden at the new Primary Children’s and Families’ Cancer Research Center at HCI.
Derby Days which will be held from May 1-7 and is an opportunity for our brotherhood to get involved within the Cornell community. Throughout the week brothers will be participating in numerous events around campus with other Cornell Organizations to raise money.
We have set the goal to $25,000 and hope to go above and beyond that to honor our dear friend and his family. Any amount is greatly appreciated and we thank you for doing your part in honoring Matthew's memory.
