Late August update:
On March 24 2016 our friend Derek Birnie started a new kind of life. He found a significant brain tumor that day, receiveved serious surgery on the 26th, received a more detailed diagnosis on April 4, and launched into an aggressive set of treatments that will continue for the the next year or so. Derek and his supporters have provided more detailed upate at CaringBridge .
As Derek found himself in the hospital, his good friends and family members rallied in ways he says he has never knows possible. Andy launched an active fundraising effort and hundreds of family, friends, and strangers pitched in. As a result, between March and August we have been able to cover crucial health care, personal care and expenses like rent and meals, and care for my children. Meanwhile, it looks like the crucial benefits like Social Securities will begin to get expenses covered in October. Thank you!
Some have asked what other ways helps could still make financial ways.
1. We didn't quite close the gap this the 6-months with no income or benefits. Until benefits begin to be delivered, people are working on creative ways to pay crucial bills (like rent, health insurance, etc.). Short-term reasonable contributions could actually help the key bills!
2. Think with us creatively about preparing for other futures. Some friends working to anticipate future needs like children's growth or experiement medical help.
If you would like to participate, every thought helps. You can give using GoFundMe here. Or you can contact one of Derek's helpers.
