When Derek was in middle school, he was given his Dad's old guitar as a gift. From that moment forward, music was embedded in his life. He could play the piano and sing, but his true passion and talent was the guitar.
Derek loved sharing music with family and friends. His family received endless texts with music and song recommendations, insisting that this is "one of my favorite bands ever!" Over the years, music kept Derek connected to his family, whether it was playing RockBand in Virginia, jamming in Quinter, playing music in Kansas City or playing our homemade set of pipes/spoons around the holidays.
When Derek played the guitar, it was special. He had enormous talent.
Guitar lessons got him started, but most of Derek's skills were self-taught and came from many hours of hard work. He enjoyed writing his own music, learning new songs and putting tutorials online for others to study. We know the peace and joy that music brought Derek and believe he would want other kids to find the same happiness from music.
In honor of Derek, we have created this GoFundMe account. All proceeds will be donated to Harmony Project KC, an organization in Kansas City that shares the same passion for music as Derek. We will collect donations through GoFundMe and all funds will be donated to Harmony Project KC in Derek's name.
