Hi! My name is Derek, I'm a 23 y.o. transman living in the US. I just got my surgery date for my top surgery: November 30th, 2023, and I need help making sure I have the funds for this in time.
I first had inklings I was trans when I was 12-13, and I gave myself the name Derek at that time. Ever since then, I've been working hard on making sure my outside matches how I feel on the inside, with hormone therapy starting in 2021 and getting my legal name changed shortly after. Despite doing a majority of this independently, I've hit a point where I realize I need to ask for help.
Insurance is going to cover a good chunk of my surgery, which I am fortunate and grateful for. However, I need additional assistance for the time I will be spending away from work, the out-of-pocket balance, and the necessities for my recovery. Short-term disability through my work does not apply to me due to my recovery time and the waiting period before financial aid.
Here's a cost breakdown of what I'll be needing to pay:
- Surgery price before insurance: $7,805
- Amount left of deductible I will need to pay: $2,046
- Amount I will pay after the deductible is hit, 20% of cost: ~$1,151 (this is a rough estimate and I'm still pretty new to being on my own insurance-wise)
At this step, I need to pay ~$3,197.
On top of this, I will be missing 2 weeks (hopefully not more) of work, equating to ~$1,600.
In total, this is $4,797. Any additional funds of the $5,000 (or more) will go to food and other necessities.
