Destiny's Spelman College Fund

Growing up has not always been an easy journey. However, the dual challenges of being born with Type 1 Diabetes and the experience of being entangled in the foster care system from an early age have molded me into a strong, supportive, and hardworking young lady. Because of my struggles, I was able to relate and “put myself in their shoes” by the many unpleasant experiences I have faced being a part of the foster care system. I came across many youths who had similar stories to me, facing abuse from biological parents and I was able to relate to them.  “Even when I’m a mess, I still put on a vest, with an S on my chest, I’m a superwoman” These quotes are lyrics to Superwoman by Alicia Keys which is a song I would listen to when I was in a shelter. This quote inspires me to want more out of life despite the burdens I have faced in life, at such a young age.

College has always been my dream, from seeing my role models come from a similar background and attend college. Figures such as Michelle Obama, Yara Shahidi, and Taraji P. Henson inspired me to make a difference. Through the University of Penn, Yale University, and Spelman College I learned to use my voice to advocate for myself, learn from other’s experiences and perspectives while also creating change. While at Community College of Philadelphia and Villanova University, I attended programs that expose children to the concept of college with people from different backgrounds. Through these programs, I found out the importance of using my voice to promote change. Growing up I have always had to use my voice to advocate for myself and others. This has prompted me to want to pursue a career in political science along with communications/media. By using this platform, I can share my story and the stories of others to inspire, create awareness, and provide hope. I am not defined by the stereotypes of my experiences. Through attending college and working hard, I know I will be successful.

Most foster children typically do not attend college so the support is not very strong from the system to set up college students for success. My college fund will not only help benefit my college tuition but also help me get the necessities I need such as my computer, my dorm supplies, and transportation during my college experience to be able to achieve my goals and obtain my degree. Reaching this goal would mean the WORLD to me as Spelman is the #1 HBCU and I believe my story is one to say #BLACKGIRLMAGIC, knowing that I will be able to attend and prioritize college finances over hard academic work will help me secure my degree. I will be double majoring. My studies will be Political Science (Pre-Law Track) and Communications/Media. While these contributions will benefit my college experience this will NOT be an opportunity for me to stop my hard work or utilizing other sources of income. I have big dreams and plans that I plan on investing in to give back to my community and it would mean EVERYTHING if I could have support.
