Las selvas y arrecifes de la Península de Yucatán son hogar del sistema de ríos subterráneos más grande del mundo: el gran acuífero Maya. Bajo este frágil suelo se encuentra la principal fuente de agua para el sureste de México y la reserva de agua dulce más importante del país, gravemente amenazada por el megaproyecto Tren Maya.

Durante más de dos años, hemos documentado y expuesto la destrucción de los sistemas de vida que sustentan nuestro territorio y hemos hecho red con organizaciones locales, nacionales e internacionales para defenderlo. El atractivo de la región, particularmente del Caribe mexicano, está directamente ligado a la riqueza natural y cultural que lo caracteriza. No hay futuro para la economía si no tenemos ecosistemas y sociedades sanas.

Ante esta situación crítica, estamos impulsando acciones legales para frenar el impacto devastador del tren y otros proyectos asociados. En alianza con TerraVida AC, una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a impulsar y fortalecer procesos de cuidado y defensa de la naturaleza y los diversos territorios que sostienen la vida y el patrimonio biocultural en México, usaremos los recursos para:

El tren no está terminado, y aún si llega a estarlo no sabemos si podrá sostenerse a sí mismo; no sería la primera vez que un tren se abandona en estas selvas. Tu apoyo es crucial para defender nuestras fuentes de vida líquida y esta tierra generosa pero frágil.

¿Quiénes somos?

SOS Cenotes es un colectivo independiente y apartidista compuesto por una comunidad de personas que buscan conocer, visibilizar y defender los ecosistemas y formas de vida de la Península de Yucatán, amenazados por megaproyectos de desarrollo impulsados por el Tren Maya.

The jungles and reefs of the Yucatan Peninsula are home to the largest underground river system in the world: the great Maya aquifer. Beneath this fragile soil lies the main source of water for southeastern Mexico and the most important freshwater reserve in the country, seriously threatened by the Maya Train megaproject.

For more than two years, we have documented and exposed the destruction of the life systems that sustain our territory. We work as a network with local, national and international organizations to defend it. The attractiveness of the region, particularly the Mexican Caribbean, is directly linked to the natural and cultural wealth that characterizes it. There is no future for the economy if we do not have healthy ecosystems and societies.

Faced with this critical situation, we are promoting legal actions to stop the devastating impact of the train and other associated projects. In alliance with TerraVida AC, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and strengthening processes of care and defense of nature and the diverse territories in Mexico, we will use the resources to:

• Strengthen current legal processes related to the destruction of biodiversity in the territory and the protection of the rights of indigenous communities.

• Initiate new legal processes related to the destruction of ecosystems along the entire train line in the states of Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo.

• Strengthen the territorial defense, communication and awareness actions of the SOS Cenotes collective.

The train is not finished, and even if it is, we do not know if it will be able to sustain itself; it would not be the first time that a train is abandoned in these jungles. Your support is crucial to defend our sources of liquid life and this generous but fragile land.
