Detroit Moped Works Flood Assistance Fund
Overnight and early into this morning, June 26th 2021 Metro Detroit was hit with severe flooding. All roads to Detroit Moped Works were flooded so we were not able to quickly access the building to diagnose and work on the *suspected* flood; further a power outage disabled our ability to begin drying and/or even monitor the *suspected* damage.
Without power nor access to the shop, our staff was all able to spend all of Saturday dealing with our home floods (and vehicle floods, fun right!).
With our homes beginning to stabilize, I got in my car (the company van) to head to the shop, but apparently the water in the rear quarter panel caused an electrical fire (Crazy I know), so for now the shop is also out our hauling vehicle & I ride a bicycle... I digress.
Upon eventual arrival at the shop we found that our basement storage facility took on at least 2 feet of sewer water causing previously neatly stacked water proof bins of parts / tires / and vehicles to float, flip, and knock even more stuff into the seweragey basement ocean.
When the power is restored, we will be able to begin the multi-day process of drying the basement & parts; cleaning the sewerage from the basement and parts; editing our inventory (throwing ruined parts away).
I'm all for being optimistic and looking at this as a time to further catalogue our bits and bobs to make our inventory offered more comprehensive BUT it's going to take time with the shop closed making no income, no money for staff & cleaning supplies, AND NO POWER, which they now say wont be on until the middle of the night tomorrow / Monday morning at the earliest.
According to DTE "the DTE substation that provides electrical power to your neighborhood sustained extensive damage from the heavy rains and flooding that occurred this morning. The extreme flooding on the roads near the substation delayed our access earlier today. At this time, we have completed our initial damage assessment." SO, they haven't even started fixing it, they've only "assessed" so far... whomp whomp.
This means that we'll inevitably end up loosing even more inventory ($$) to the flood, cleaning what inventory we can save will take more labor ($$), we'll need to be closed from regular business ($$) for more days; than if we had power now to begin addressing the damage. It's just the worst.
SO that's why we are asking for some cash!
This cash will not only offset the thousands of dollars of inventory that will need to be completely thrown out and thousands of dollars of inventory value that will be lost as salvageable parts rust over; but it will also help fund the days closed and staff hours to salvage what we can and come out of this with a better more robust catalogued inventory available for you the customers.
Help us help you and make the best of this *poopy* situation.
Sorry for any goofy verbiage above, its been a really long day dealing with the flood (and a really long year for that matter); but I figured I should get this thing posted while I'm not feeling too proud to ask. Thanks in advance for your generosity,
Alex & The Detroit Moped Works team.
