Detroit Resists in Venice!

Detroit Resists is a coalition of activists, artists, architects, and community members working on behalf of an inclusive, equitable, and democratic city (www.detroitresists.org , @detroitresists ). In conjunction with the 2016 Venice Biennale, members of Detroit Resists have been invited to Venice, Italy, by the Venice-based independent art organization S.a.L.E. Docks  to lead workshops & conversations uplifting the rich legacy of grassroots design-based resistance of Detroit's Afrikan and Indigenous art communities. For over 40 years, these art communities have been architecting resilience through culturally-literate design that creates, re-stabilizes and activates community spaces for residents historically and systematically omitted from conventional architecture's imaginings.

Supporting the travel of Detroit Resist's member Bryce Detroit to and from Venice will allow the group to present Detroit's counter-architectures in the context of one of the world's central architectural exhibitions and, more specifically, to augment the presentation of speculative proposals for Detroit by sanctioned "visionary architects" exhibited in the Biennale's U.S. Pavilion. The travel + workshop material expenses of the Detroit Resists members Detroit--Venice--Detroit are $6,000.
