UPDATE - 1 WEEK

Hello Friends, time for another brief update. If you know me, you will read this update and know that it is coming from me (Karen) on behalf of Seantry because she would never ask for help the way I am about to and lets be honest she is far more of a professional than yours truly. Anyways, you’re stuck with me. So buckle up, here we go! * for the TLDR people out there, I see you, but please still read the part about the lessons we have learned through all of this at the bottom.

Seantry and the boys have found a temporary place to stay for at least the next 1-2 months, and will continue to search for something more budget-friendly as at this rate the living allowance from insurance will run out in 11 months, with an estimated 18-24months before they will be able to move back in.

We went to do a walk through with the restoration and insurance company to see if anything is salvable. Sadly and not surprisingly, what was salvageable could fit into a small blue plastic bucket and was basically the bucket itself, and a pump for a bike tire. We were surprised however, to see Seantry in a red shirt (not black), and that man, that woman can pull off a hard hat!

We have received many donations of clothes, thank you! While trying to help go through them all and wash and dry them etc, I accidentally shrunk a nice wool sweater, so if anybody is looking for some for-fall fashion for their barbie, please let me know.

Ultimately cash donations are so very much appreciated. HOWEVER, if you are looking to give something slightly more personal or allocate your donation so it goes towards a certain thing then gift cards for the following places are very much appreciated. Heck, I will even accept any remaining balances on gift cards too.

Seantry’s youngest boy is turning 13 years old next week, if you put yourself in his melted shoes for a moment it will hopefully put my requests into perspective. (I have been told Nintendo / Mario3 is not the in thing anymore? Will these children really grow up not to know the excitement of a raccoon tail??)
Stores for the boys to replace their toasted laptops for school and gaming consoles
- Best Buy
- MEC ( mountain biking gear for both boys)
- There is another mountain biking store but I saw a puppy and got distracted and now I can’t remember the name of the store, you know the one though. Right?

ITEMS that need replacing that are critical to Seantry’s survival and the teenage boys to be able to cook for themselves are:
1. Nespresso Machine
2. Ninja air fryer with Grill
3. Costco gift cards for things to put into the air fryer.

And as a bonus for our loyal folks who have made it this far, please let me share a few nuggets of info that we have picked up through this whole ordeal.

- If you are trying to be as ‘green as dean’ and put in a heat pump, yes there is a government grant to help offset some of the cost, however that grant does not come in a timely manner, AND make sure you increase the amount your insurance covers to include any new additions or betterments. Do this step as the installation happens because 11 days later your house might burn down.

- If you go buy something and they want you to give them an email or become a member or whatever, just make up an email just for your purchases so that you can just log in and see what you ordered, how much you paid for it, the date you purchased it, and the value paid. That would be super handy right about now.

- I will suggest to Mr. Fluevog that his shoes should be sold In fire proof (and waterproof) boxes. Just going to throw that one out there for free.

- I know those smoke detectors can be super annoying and send the dog into a PTSD spiral every time you burn toast or the cheese on your nachos browns a bit ‘too much’, but don’t unplug those bad boys and make sure they’re in working order, that and a barking chihuahua can make the difference between getting out alive or not.

- Get to know your neighbours, they’re probably some pretty rad people.

- If / (when) there is another worldwide pandemic, which sends this already messed up housing economy into a spiral causing a certain bank to have the exceptional idea of raising interest rates a quick 10 times, making the hydrogen bonds of this housing bubble even stronger but not bursting, maybe its time to also increase the coverage of insurance.

Fine print: The insurance adjusters have been lovely, it is just a matter of the plan purchased and what is covered. Just go increase yours anyways okay?

https://twitter.com/PortMoodyFR/status/1688565344330514432/photo/1I've started this partly because I don't know what else to do, and I know that this is going to be a very long road back to normalcy.

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Seantry for 19 years! Seantry is the kindest most giving person I know, and it's time for us to give back when she needs our help. She is an amazing compassionate veterinarian and a single mother to two teenage boys. (I'm throwing the single part in, in case there are any eligible bachelors or firemen out there, I mean just for completeness' sake.)

At around 4:30am this morning she experienced every mother's worst nightmare, trying to round up the kids and the animals to escape a massive fire. Thankfully she and the kids got out but a few animals were not as lucky. The firemen were amazing and managed to rescue who they could (mittens the cat in the photo). We are still waiting to hear about the others.

They escaped with literally the clothes they had on and have nothing else.
She is going to need to
  • find a place to stay longer term until the place is rebuilt or ??
  • get clothing, general supplies and toiletries for herself and her boys
  • food and supplies for the animals, and emergency vet care for the animals that did survive. (( They will have smoke inhalation and need to be in oxygen overnight. IF they survive this phase, then eventually they can come out of oxygen and have their burns managed))
  • possibly a car if it didn't survive either as it was parked in the garage.
  • I'm sure there are things that we haven't even thought of yet.

Please help Seantry, her kids and their animals if you are able to do so. It is going to be a long winding uphill road, and we need to take care of each other.
Much appreciated.
