Devastating loss for stray dogs in Egypt

Donation protected

The call that we dreaded on 28-02-2020 happened. Janet Johnstone, our incredible founder at Janets Wadi Support The Street Dogs Of Dahab, Egypt had been found deceased. The exact circumstances are still inconclusive. The doors have officially closed to the sanctuary and we are no longer taking in any more animals. The cats, rabbits, donkeys and horses have all been rehomed, but now the 150 rescued street dogs left behind need your help!

Since 2001 Janet was well known in Dahab, for rescuing animals and fought for them ferociously throughout her time in Egypt. Rescuing sick and abandoned animals was just the beginning, Janet was adept at saving poisoned dogs and bringing them back from the brink of death (not only street dogs but pets too). A shelter soon followed, full of happy, grateful fur babies, all whilst working alone. Janet provided them a lifeline, they survived a cruel and nightmarish world on the streets. Janet did so much for the animals in Egypt, it's only fair we do what we can to help them in return, we cannot let them down.

Since the news of Janet’s death broke, condolences and tributes poured in over social media and from all across the globe.

Now the animals she worked so tirelessly to save must be rehomed. Given thirty days to evacuate, the covid19 virus has bid us some time, but we know at any point now, we could be told to move all the animals that have called it home for so long, with little notice. Currently land and alternatives are being looked into, however we can’t take all the 150 dogs, so all those that can be adopted must be prepped and ready to travel overseas, it’s the best and only option, homes in Egypt for their native dog will be few and far between. We are hoping and planning for all the remaining wilder dogs and those that can’t be adopted, will move to a new smaller sanctuary where they will be supported for as long as needed, and able to live in safety and peace until the day they die, but finding land and getting permission to open a new sanctuary is not guaranteed.

We are at complete crisis point and need some urgent help please to raise the funds needed to move so many deserving beautiful dogs. They are ready to start their new lives, find new friendships, happiness and security. With an outpouring of support and generous offers from individuals and other rescue organisations willing to offer rescue places, we would absolutely love to be able to accept their kindness and help and send 50/60 dogs to the UK and Europe to be proper little spoilt companions, but unfortunately it’s pretty expensive.

How can you help?

Your money will help us, you are their only hope, if you can’t donate, please share everywhere.  There are also regular updates of the sanctuary dogs on our facebook page :) Janets Wadi Support The Street Dogs Of Dahab.  This gofundme wouldn’t recognise Janet’s Wadi Support The Street Dogs Of Dahab, so had to roll with my name, Hayley (U.K. admin).

Stay safe all and thanks for taking the time to read and care about Egypt’s underdog
