Develop A New Catheter For Baby Dialysis
Our son, Braysen, was born with Bilateral Renal Agenesis (BRA).
The BRA diagnosis means that babies did not develop their kidneys in the womb, and therefore, they cannot produce amniotic fluid needed to develop their lungs.
Typically, these babies are given two options:
1. Immediate Abortion.
2. Take the baby full term and immediate death due to improper lung development.
We were blessed to find, and be accepted into, a new medical research trial that is being tested to potentially save babies like our son in the future.
During his journey, we have experienced quite a bit of difficulty with his catheter, which is required for acting as his kidneys. A peritoneal dialysis catheter is a small plastic tube that is implanted under the skin to provide a painless way of withdrawing excess fluid from the abdominal cavity.
We are partnering with a company called Kickr Designs in Atlanta, Georgia, to design a new peritoneal dialysis catheter that will hopefully give doctors internal access after placing the catheter.
Our son Braysen has had to have 4 additional surgeries that would not have been necessary with a proper catheter design!
These babies are required to be on dialysis until they reach two years old or 25 pounds.
Then they become eligible for a kidney transplant. A proper catheter design is imperative!
We want to ensure future families have a smoother experience if they must go through a similar diagnosis! God bless and love to all!
