Devon Fowlin brutality injured by Toronto police
Donation protected
Hi everyone, we are the family of Devon Fowlin. If you've got some time to spare, we are asking to take the time to read our brother's story. This fundraiser aims at raising funds for his housing for the next few months as he gets back on his feet, for therapy and supports to help our family heal from this trauma, as we fight for justice.
Monday, February 27, 2023, our brother Devon was left in life-threatening condition when he was shot multiple times by Toronto police while walking his dog in the park. In the area of Black Creek Drive and Tretheway Drive.
Devon was not a threat to the public, nor was he a threat to the cops. When given a single command, Devon complied, yet Toronto police took it up themselves to discharge their weapons, striking him numerous times instead of tasing him or attempting to de-escalate situation. Initially, SIU stated that two officers tased him. However, since the incident, we have not found a single taser mark or burn anywhere on his body.
They've completely shattered the main artery in his right arm have which may lead to permanent nerve damage. His right arm is also factured and in a cast. His wounds are so large and deep that he has to attend a clinic every single day for the next several months to change his bandages.
Upon our arrival at Sunnybrook hospital on Wednesday, March 1st, we were told that we could not see him with no explanation why. It wasn't until we hired a lawyer that we were given access to be by his bedside. Within a few days of us being there with him, he discharged himself from the hospital as he did not feel safe and would rather continue his recovery at home with his family.
Though Devon admitted to SIU and the media to having a knife, it is a knife he uses to cook with while living in his car and at times he would use the same knife to cut tree branches off to throw to his dog as they play fetch in the park. What made the matter even worse was that Toronto police could have done more instead of doing what they did to him. Instead all they saw was another black man to target.
In times like this, when black men of African descent are shot up and / or killed by police in Canada, the cops involved are not held accountable for their actions. And we intend on changing that.
This entire ordeal has been a living nightmare. It has been stressful and filled with so much pain, and anxiety. Our brother is shaken, afraid, and even more so damage from the trauma inflicted upon him by the people who are to "serve" and "protect" the public.
Our family is grateful and blessed because our brother lived to tell his story, and we thank you for your help and support in bringing justice to Devon.
