Well 2020 is shaping up to be a crazy and challenging year for everyone.
My name is Dan Richardson, I am a New Jersey state certified teacher and avid fisherman. After spending almost my entire career working with students from underserved communities, I got to see the disparaging disconnect my kids had with the outdoors. I realized the only thing stopping my students from accessing the most beautiful and healthy hobbies in this world were lack of resources.
I independently launched a small fishing program through a public school four years ago. In that time, I have worked with over 50 students in multiple schools, and have done this all on my own with the help of generous donations from friends and family.
I’m now dedicated to partner with 2 more organizations, and expand a free educational program to promote fishing as a recreation for underserved youth. I have expanded my team and created a Board of Advisors to launch STREETS2STREAMS formally this year.
Unfortunately, because of COVID-19 our Spring season is being cut short. Our students are missing out on their final year with our program, which is another sad part to this global pandemic.
However, we have learned from this situation, it is vital to teach kids healthy ways to stay active during historically challenging times. Teaching kids, especially from city environments, how to find nature and enjoy their time outdoors is the center of our mission, and in today’s global crisis, it couldn’t be more important.
So we want to keep our mission going, and we are working hard to come up with Fall programming. We are expanding our program and will now be working in two different locations for the Fall. This means we need to expand our resources, and that is where we need your help.
Spring 2020:
- We have 3 senior students who we want to send away with fishing rod and reel combos/tackle.
Fall 2020:
-We need 5: light weight fly rod and reel set ups for pan fish.
-We need 3: 7/8wt fly rod set ups for carp and stripers
-We need to renew our Trout in the Classroom and make repairs to our current tank.
-Create and Develop interactive website
-2 Fishing Trips
-We also need 5 heavy spin rod set ups for striped bass fishing.
-Landing Nets
-Rubber deck boats/Hip Waders
-Tackle and pliers for each student
