DFWROS’s fundraiser for incoming Refugees

Tax deductible
DFWROS was started to help refugees successfully adapt to their new society. DFWROS identified a gap in services currently available to refugees - MENTORING.  We believe that to successfully adapt, refugee families MUST have access to a mentorship program as well as have their basic survival needs fulfilled. Our endeavor is to bridge the gap between refugees and social workers who cannot or do not follow through as guides and mentors.

Mentoring a family requires patient listening to their needs and concerns on a weekly basis.  We help families with many things; simple and complicated that we take for granted such as: how to speak and communicate in English (e.g. ESL registration), how to gain access to skills, how to register children for school, how to use simple household appliances, how and where to store food, how to cross a road, how to get a library card, how to keep their apartment clean, how to maintain personal hygiene and so much more. At DFWROS, we mentor as well as distribute basic essential items such as food, clothing, household goods, health and beauty aids and so on.

Once refugees arrive in DFW, they start the Newcomer Orientation Classes at DFWROS CENTER, which  include:
● ESL Classes - Volunteers teach women basic English two days a week.
● Emergency Preparedness Classes - Teachers prepare kids and adults for emergency situations.
● Mentoring Classes - Mentors hold classes every week for women to teach basic day-to-day activities.
● Dressmaking  Classes - Ambreen, a professional designer, provides a 6-month course teaching tailoring to women.
● Workforce development - Teachers, mentors, and volunteers teach leadership skills, employment skills, resume development, and financial literacy.

The mentorship program will have a profound impact on the project area and the community.  It will:
● help to build an insular support network
● assist in the main challenges refugees face: housing, language, job skills and placement, establishing a support network
● bring assistance to refugees from outside employers who are willing to hire them
● build a psychosocial system for refugees
● help refugees to become empowered emotionally, financially, professionally and personally
● create a HUB for the entire DFWROS community
