Working Mother Going Back to School
Donation protected
I have been teaching music in a private school and have been very successful in this position for eight years. My skills as an educator and a musician have grown exponentially through teaching. I have also discovered a love for composing and arranging my own music for use in the classroom, and have found that I am a talented curriculum writer. In going back to school, my goal is to pursue a Masters in Music Education with a focus on Music composition so that one day I may publish the curriculum that I create and be an established composer of music for children.
My school has graciously allowed me to reduce my hours to part-time so that I can continue to teach in the mornings while going to school in the afternoons. Unfortunately, this does mean that my already very modest teacher's salary will now be cut in half, with no benefits available. My husband and I both agree that this is an important step I need to take. However, even with my full salary my family has been living on a very tight budget. We are apprehensive about what this next year has in store for us financially.
The local university I have found that is best able to accomodate my schedule while still retaining my teaching job costs $26,450 for the year's tuition, plus an additional $575 (total cost $27,025)for a summer class that will allow me to finish in a year. Through scholarships and grants I have been able to raise $11,500 thus far. I have been approved for $12,500 in loans but would prefer to take out as little in loans as possible, due to the fact that we are still paying off sizable loans for my husband's education. However, even if I did take out the full amount, this still leaves $2,450 out of pocket for my family. It is for this reason that I have decided to ask for $16,000. I am estimating that the total cost of tuition I will be responsible for is $15,525, but have not yet determined what the cost of books and materials may be for the classes I am taking this year.
