I am a 67-year-old disabled woman who has basically been homeless for the last 8 months, and unfortunately, things have gone from bad to worse. I was recently discharged from a rehab facility where I spent the past 2 months for physical therapy after being discharged from the hospital, where I spent 2 weeks being treated for cellulitis in my ankles due to a circulation problem. For 8 months, I have been looking for an apartment in the central FL area, but finding an affordable apartment when one is on a fixed income is virtually impossible. I have searched in 5 different counties, but the apartments are either far too expensive, or complexes that I could afford have waiting lists of anywhere from 4 months to 4 YEARS, or available apartments that I could afford are on the 2nd or 3rd floor (with no elevator), and since I am now in a wheelchair, that is impossible for me. I just checked into an extended-stay hotel, but could only afford 2 weeks, which pretty much cost me nearly everything I had saved for an apartment. The room has a kitchenette, and my brother took my debit card and went to the store for me to buy some food, but unfortunately, I cannot do that a second time, since I am left with VERY little money in my bank account. The problems don't stop there, either. I am nearly out of several necessary medications, including my diabetic med (which is expensive), and I cannot afford to refill them until I get my next Social Security payment on April 3rd, at which time I might be living in my car, since I also cannot afford to extend my stay here at the hotel. Because of a rapidly deteriorating hip prosthesis, I can no longer walk, and am relegated to a wheelchair, but I cannot have the needed surgery done until I have lost at least 100 pounds (by order of the orthopedic surgeon), but that may become easier now that I cannot afford much food.
I have lost so very much over the past 8 months: my home, my cats (who had to be taken to a shelter, or given to another family since I could no longer care for them), my sense of security and peace of mind, and I may have to end up selling my car, which I don't want to do, but the monthly insurance premium, which keeps increasing even though I have done nothing wrong, is the one expense that I could eliminate if I sell the car. Very honestly, I am extremely tired of one bad thing after another happening, and admittedly, I have become deeply depressed, and becoming stressed and fearful about facing another day.
My late mother always said that everything happens for a reason, and I struggle to understand why this is happening. All I know is that I desperately need to depend on and request the assistance of kind, compassionate, empathetic strangers to help me. I will deeply appreciate any and all donations to help me keep a roof over my head temporarily while I continue my search for a permanent home, and to allow me to refill my medications and to afford food.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to read my story. May God bless y6u all!
