Hello all! First, I would like to thank you for visiting my GoFundMe campaign! I would like to share a little more about myself, my team, and the efforts we have been doing towards hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.

My name is Legna Figueroa-Cosme, and I am a PhD candidate in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and obtained my bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez. Upon graduation, I joined the GT community in August 2013! Currently, I am working as a research assistant in the laboratory of Prof. Younan Xia. For more info about my research interest, visit http://www.nanocages.com/current.

Hurricane Maria, a massive storm with sustained winds of 165 mph and gusts of up to 215 mph, made landfall in Puerto Rico this past September 20th, leaving 100% of the island without power, very limited communication and major damage to the general infrastructure. As part of the Puerto Rican community at Georgia Tech, I decided to organize a Hurricane Relief Efforts in collaboration with our students, faculty, and staff. Among the members of my team are: Luis Ocasio (staff from Registrar Office), Marilu Suárez (staff from The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs), Juan Carlos Rodríguez (faculty member from the School of Modern Languages), Ricardo Bonilla-Alice (graduate student and co-leader), Victoria Cabán (graduate student and secretary), Camila Pagán and Ramiro Santana (representatives of undergraduate students) and Legna Figueroa-Cosme (graduate student and leader of this campaing). Our organization is registered in the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) under the name Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Efforts – GT. For more information about our efforts, visit https://diasporapresente.wixsite.com/diasporapresente.

This GoFundMe account was created to collect monetary donations to help the people of Puerto Rico. Ricardo Bonilla-Alicea, student coleader of this campaign will transfer the monetary contributions to our bank account and further donate them to several non-profit organizations that are working to help Puerto Rico. Among the organizations that will receive these donations are: Contigo Puerto Rico, Operation Boricua- Helping Puerto Rico one plane load at a time, and Fundación Mi Pueblo from Corozal, Puerto Rico. Also, we are collaborating with the students of the School of Medicine at the UCC (Universidad Central del Caribe) in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Through this collaboration, we will provide uniforms and school supplies to students who lost everything during the storm. Details of this activity will be posted in our webpage (above) and Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/diasporapresente/. Please visit our pages to be up-to-date with our initiative! Be part of us!
