OUR FILM
As Genevieve tries to navigate through her life with an alter personality, she begins to have alarming flashbacks of memories she wasn’t a part of. As Genevieve begins to suspect Stevie, (her primary alter), of being more dangerous than she was aware of, she begins to slip into a world of physical and metaphoric hallucinations that pull her closer to revealing the source of her trauma.
-Striving to de-stigmatize mental illness and give a first person perspective of this disorder.
-Aiming to use Dissociative Identity Disorder as a gateway to explore how trauma affects the mind.
-This film explores duality in personalities and aims to distance the demonization of these disorders.
-Therapist office serves as the D.I.D. “waiting room” phenomenon, where the other personalities wait for their turn in the “spotlight.”
-Gives audience a twist, showing the villain is not the mental disorder itself, but the person who caused the trauma.
INTRO
As a UCF Master's student in their feature film program, I am on the journey of creating my first feature film!
This film is about a woman with Dissociative Identity Disorder who begins to remember things she wasn't a part of. This film explores the inner working of this mental illness and its causes.
I feel like it is time to shed light on the reality of how mental illness can effect the mind of the afflicted. I want to reverse the stigma of "mentally ill" subjects being the villain.
There is so much more to these individuals, and I aim for this movie to give the audience an insight into this experience.
This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart, so I plan to address this with as much professionally and attention as possible to honor and educate.
THE STORY
My film DID I? takes the audience on a journey through a woman’s mind with Dissociative Identity Disorder. This disorder was originally named Multiple Personality Disorder, and describes the experience of patients living with fragmented pieces of different personalities that “take over” their consciousness to protect the original born host of a body. I found this subject very fascinating, and it's only starting to generate medical findings. As this disorder is unique to each person who exhibits the base symptoms, this disorder does have some creative leeway while creating my main character’s story.
My film follows a woman names Genevieve who knows she has DID, but hides it. When she begins to see her alter, Genevieve begins to slip into a world of hallucinations and flashes of memory she was not a part of creating. From here, Genevieve evaluates how dangerous her other half may truly be.
My goal with this film is to give the audience a suffocating and entrancing look into the mind of someone who shares a body with multiple sides of herself. With this film, I am hoping to use the audience’s preconceived notion of mental illness serving as the backstory for the antagonist.
I am hoping to lead the audience down a path they think they have seen before, but then revealing this story has been about trauma, and that these personalities in this disorder are created for the intention of protecting the original personality that experienced trauma worthy of fragmenting the core fiber of who they were.
