RARE DISORDER TREATMENT - DID
My name is Chloe Wilkinson, and I have a rare disorder known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder).
DID is a DSM recognised psychiatric disorder which affects around 1% of the population. It is, at its most basic, a form of complex PTSD caused by extreme childhood trauma or abuse; which prevents the mind from forming one whole, intergrated personality as it would in normal development. This trauma creates amnesic walls in the brain, resulting a seperate, alternate personality - an 'alter' who holds memories of the trauma separate to the main consciousness.
DID results in blackouts, separate personality states with their own trauma memories, opinions and needs, severe amnesia that can last for weeks or months, extreme fatigue, suicidal tendencies and often physical bodily harm, and a whole host of secondary symptoms.
Because this disorder is extremely stigmatised and under studied, there are very few individuals qualified to treat DID, and they are not covered on the NHS - just the diagnosis alone *which I now have* cost £600, and that doesn't include treatment.
I am unable to work due to the severity of my symptoms, and was also forced to leave university for the same reasons. I can only return to study and hopefully work if I have proof of treatment... which I cannot afford on my own.
As I cannot work I have no way to fund this treatment, which under my current therapist costs £60 per session.
I want to believe that I deserve to have a shot at my own life and overcome the difficulties and stigmas of my disorder. I want more than anything to give back the love and support I have received, by becoming qualified to treat other rare and misunderstood disorders like my own.
I am, in all other ways, an ordinary person. I love to draw, to read, to pet dogs and spend time with my friends and family. I hope to raise awareness and support for others in difficult situations like my own. I run a YouTube channel, DissociaDID, dedicated to providing free, scientifically proven education about Dissociative Identity Disorder, and the realities of living with it, in hopes of helping other systems like myself.
Please help me to afford the treatment I need to move forward with my life and heal. A little goes a long way to supporting this cause and I would be forever grateful for whatever you are able to spare, (or if not, please, share!) This is the only option we have left.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day :)
