Diego's Road to Recovery

On March 3rd, Diego was involved in a car accident that changed his life. After paramedics and firefighters extricated him from his car -- where he was entrapped for 28 minutes when he was t-boned by a tow truck -- he was rushed to the nearest trauma hospital in Park Ridge where he underwent surgery to remove his ruptured spleen. A day later, when doctors ordered an MRI, they discovered severe brain damage diagnosing him with DAI (diffuse axonal injury). That’s when Jasmin, his high school sweetheart and wife since 2018, was told by the neurologist that the love of her life was in a coma.

 

At 24 years old, Diego had become his family’s (Jasmin, 3-yr-old Dieguito + baby girl on the way) sole provider. A hard-working seasonal roofer, he saved up enough money to purchase their first home in April 2020 and their brand new car a year later. He was well on his way to build a solid foundation for his perfect little family.

 

Diego was in a coma for a month, and was then transferred to the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab where he took part of their unique Amicous program and slowly became fully conscious again. Nearly three months after his accident, he's now back home doing outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy three days out of the week. Diego is young, he's a fighter and we are confident he will have a successful recovery. He just needs time and lots of support. Since the accident, he obviously hasn't been able to work, and doctors don’t know when/if he’ll be strong and stable enough to go back.

El 3 de marzo, Diego estuvo involucrado en un accidente de carro que le cambió la vida. Después de que paramédicos y bomberos lo extraditaran de su carro – donde estuvo atrapado por 28 minutos luego de que una grúa le pegara – fue llevado al hospital más cercano en Park Ridge donde lo operaron de emergencia y le removieron su bazo que se había roto en el impacto. Un día después, cuando los doctores ordenaron hacerle un MRI, descubrieron que tenía daño cerebral diagnosticándolo con DAI (diffuse axonal injury). Fue entonces cuando los doctores le dijeron a Jasmin, su esposa desde el 2018, que el amor de su vida estaba en coma.  

De tan solo 24 años, Diego se había convertido en el proveedor de su familia: Jasmin, Dieguito de 3 años y su bebé que nacerá en octubre. Un hombre trabajador desde muy joven, recientemente había ahorrado lo suficiente para comprarle casa nueva a su familia en abril del 2020 y, un año después, compró su primera camioneta. Diego estaba construyendo el fundamente que sostendría a su familia. 

Diego estuvo en coma por un mes. Luego, fue trasladado al Shirley Ryan AbilityLab donde formó parte de su programa único Amicous. Ahí fue cuando, gracias a mucha terapia, empezó a despertar y estar más consciente. Casi tres meses desde su accidente, Diego ha regresado a casa donde continuará yendo a fisioterapia, terapia ocupacional y terapia de habla. Diego es joven, es un luchador y confiamos tendrá recuperación total. Solo necesita tiempo y mucho apoyo. Desde el accidente, obviamente no ha trabajado, y los doctores no saben cuándo estará lo suficientemente fuerte y estable para regresar. 

Diego, Jasmin y sus dos bebés no solo han sido impactados emocionalmente, sino también financieramente por este evento inesperado. Así que estamos pidiendo donaciones monetarias que serán destinadas a ayudarlos con facturas médicas, sesiones de terapia no cubiertas por su seguro médico, gastos personales (renta, facturas, llegada de su bebé). ¡Por favor, lo que puedan donar los ayudará mucho!
