Dignity for the domestic workers

Donation protected
In Ethiopia, life choices for girls and woman not educated or illiterate are few and hard.  Their future at home is bleak and their only choice is to emigrate to Lebanon to work as servants.

They leave happy, confident of being able to dare a future for themselves and help their family. Reality shatters the dream in Lebanon as they find themselves in a job comparable to slavery with no rights, 14/16 hrs working daily and 7 days a week, no contact outside the house,  open to verbal and physical abuse,  no salary or a few dollars a month.

With the COVID 19 pandemic and the severe political crisis in Lebanon, these girls have literally been thrown onto the street by their owners (supposed employers), with their  suitcase or plastic bag, without money or any assistance. Hundreds of girls, make their way to the Ethiopian Embassy and to live on the street waiting. They remain day after day, on the street, alone, without food, a bleak future, no place to go in the hope of getting home to Ethiopia.

CVM volunteers and collaborators have assisted 649 of these girls to return with dignity to their families in Ethiopia, providing money for the needs for the journey and a small amount for when they get home. Now they are finally at home, bruised and hurt from their experience in Lebanon but with dignity thanks to CVM support. Amazingly their strength.  courage and will to want to restart life again even with little perspective in Ethiopia due to their youth and been uneducated.

CVM, together with our collaborators and volunteers, are working to guarantee a dignified life for these girls, little more than children. We need your support to assist them with the basis for building a future:

·         training courses to understand the world of work: contacts with the competent offices, workers’ rights, job orientation, contracts, salary.
The girls will then know how to assert their rights and to decide independently on how to build an economic perspective in their country without having to migrate and risking to return to the condition of slavery they have suffered for years.

·         Accompaniment courses, for 90 of these girls, in opening their own business: specific training courses on business development, accompaniment in the management of bureaucracy, support in the first phase of opening business, access to market etc
Girls will have a decent work, close to their family, and therefore be a resource for themselves, their family and community.

CVM’s goal of € 37,500 (450 Euro per girl) to restore life, promote dignity, and help them to overcome the violence they have suffered and to back up that hope, courage and strong will they have to restart.

Every little contribution will be a smile on the face of one of them.
