Dilly’s Den Project

Hello Everyone,

Before Dillan passed away on the 30th June 2024, we spent his last few weeks at our local hospital ‘The Royal London’.
This was where Dillan was first diagnosed on the night of 27th May 2020 in a&e, before we were rushed to Great Ormond Street to start his treatment journey. It’s also the hospital that we would go too in any emergency (any temperature 38 or above), so you can imagine…we were there a lot!

During Dillan’s first year of treatment, the Pandemic was in full swing, there was nowhere to go even if you did make it outside for fresh air, so we spent lots of time in our room watching the helicopter set off too and from the hospital roof and lots of time just staring out of the big windows on the pediatric ward. in doing so you catch a glimpse of a huge outdoor play area, from far away it looks amazing! But we were never allowed out there. In fact nobody was, or is still to this day, and this was not down to the pandemic.
The wooden beams that make the Canape which sits above the play area have rotted away, the decking on the floor is unsafe and needs to be pulled up. The Astro turf needs ripping out, and a new much higher fence needs putting in as the area is on the 7th floor.
The play equipment also needs replacing, so it’s a lot of work! But it will be worth it.

For the children at The Royal London Hospital, this is not just a missed opportunity of some play time. This is used for Palliative care patients who want to have their family come for a birthday party they may never get to have, it’s used for intensive care patients to feel the sun on their skin and breathe in some fresh air. It’s such a shame that it has been closed and unused for our entire 4 year journey, but I am going to focus on having this re-done in Dilly’s memory.
Next Steps:
The Royal London is a rented building, this is not hospital owned, so decisions have to go through the landlord. We have had the Head of Estate agree and should gain access and start meetings soon.
