Trash for Cash

As COVID-19 devastates economies and livelihoods worldwide, our own communities are facing hardships too. Amidst the government guidelines and stay-at-home directive we also see rare opportunities opening up to improve public health and our environment!

Trash 4 Cash is a youth-focused short-term initiative to help clean up Ukunda and parts of our new Diani Municipality. With County and Municipal Officers’ support and others, we will take advantage of these times when far fewer people are moving about. While observing distancing and wearing protective gear, Teams of 3 Recruits each will clean up the trash littering once-busy Markets, Roadways and other Public Spaces, and Beaches. We aim to help youth EARN CASH to buy food from local kiosks, so as to also help keep these valued supply chains going!

By acting now—as the rainy season begins— as well as clearing away trash, we aim to help curtail malarial and dengue breeding areas, unblock drains to help reduce flooding and curb waste from flowing into our marine ecosystem. We hope to help mitigate the rise of more challenges atop those already assaulting our communities and our hospitality, business and fishing sectors. We also hope that perhaps, once people see cleaner public spaces, they too will choose to dispose of trash better and protect our local environment!

As we begin, we need cash and/or in-kind donations to collect for 6 weeks, or longer if donations allow.

Join us in helping save one of Africa's most pristine environments while supporting hundreds of people who desperately need income to survive...
