Direct aid, LGBTQI (plus), lock down in Mongolia

Current Situation
Mongolia has been one of the few countries that dodged the outbreak of Covid-19, until 11 November 2020. Mongolia is under a state of emergency, and the State announced its lock down on 11 November 2020. Currently, the lock down is until the first of December, however it is suspected that the estimation of the lock down will be extended for several more months. Around the world, due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, countries and communities continue to struggle to maintain their lives and some even struggle to maintain their day to day lives. During the State enforced lock down, LGBTQI+ Mongolians face even more challenges; many live on their own without family support, and no one to turn to. The LGBT Centre works closely with our community and since the lock down we have received many inquiries seeking immediate assistance, because the lock down happened over night. Mongolians were not prepared. Those earn hourly wages, those who are already in the low income category to begin with, and young people who live on their own without any family support. All movements are restricted for most people, and people are only allowed to go to a nearby grocery store or pharmacies. The inquiries came to the Centre for basic necessities such as food and access to the internet (data).

What we need:
Direct-aid for food, cell phone-minutes and data: LGBTQI+ people are seeking assistance in food, cell phone-minutes and data.
This fund is for basic necessities, and we need this fund as soon as possible. The fund will support many LGBTQI+ people to maintain their daily food and access to the internet. Under the current circumstances, the Centre determined that the only way to support the LGBTQI+ people in need is a cash-aid to purchase food and access to the internet at the moment.

Our calculation:
On average, a daily intake of food for one is 7,100 tugrug, equivalent to 2.50 USD.
On average, a daily usage of data for one is 1,000 tugrug, equivalent to .35 USD.
The Centre plans to support LGBTQI+ people in need until the lock down restriction ends.

Our action plan:
The Centre developed questionnaires and used google forums to determine those in need; each forum will be examined by the LGBT Centre staff (total of four). Once we determine those in need, we will transfer the fund from the LGBT Centre’s bank account to the beneficiaries’. Please find the Direct aid distribution procedure here.

About us:
The LGBT Centre, a non-membership, non-partisan, non-profit and non-governmental organisation, is the first and only LGBTQI+ human rights organisation in Mongolia working on a wide range of issues pertinent to sexuality and gender minorities in Mongolia since its official registration in December 2009. The Centre has three main programmes; Health, Legal, and Youth. The Centre’s mission is to build capacity of all relevant actors and institutions, both public and private, to facilitate substantive enjoyment of human rights by all members of the LGBTQI+ community in Mongolia.

We will update our process on our social media accounts on every Tuesday at 3 PM  (GMT+8) such as how much direct-aids were provided for how many people.
