Disabled Army Vet and Family Need Help After Flood
Donation protected
This GoFundMe was created to help with expenses and the rebuilding repairs of Brian and Leila Willard's 6th Avenue, Olympia WA home which was significantly damaged by a flood.
Brian is my son. He is a 13 year Army Veteran who was medically retired after serving tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan and was awarded the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command NCO of the Year Fiscal Year 2014. Brian has a service related neurological condition and is 100% totally and permanently disabled. This condition drastically affects the use of his extremities, causes chronic debilitating pain, symptomatic seizures and syncope episodes, and requires him to be wheelchair bound much of the time. Leila is his caretaker and a Godsend. Brian and Leila have 3 young Elementary School aged children. Their youngest is a special needs child.
On Thursday, Feb 6, 2020, Brian and his family were issued an advisory flood evacuation order by the Thurston County Sheriff's Dept in Olympia, WA due to rising waters from the Nisqually River. Due to his medical condition and upon the advice of the TCSO, he and his family of 5 evacuated although there was slim to no chance that the river would ever rise to the point of reaching their home, much less flood it. Based on FEMA maps, there was a 0.2% chance of natural flooding. Thursday night, the LaGrande Dam/Tacoma Public Utilities increased the water release from their norm of around 7,000 cubic feet per second (CFS) to 18,000 CFS and continued the release through high tide which resulted in an incredible surge of water that subsequently flooded the Willard home.
Their home is currently completely unlivable. They don't have flood insurance because they are NOT in a flood zone. The estimate for repairs is approximately $100,000.
All donations to this page will directly help cover expenses to repair and rebuild their home. Thank you, sincerely, for your consideration and generosity.
