Appealing to all people
This letter is a call to action for the rights of all disabled people to be upheld and respected to the same standard as any other person. It occurred to me that I am engaging in a battle in which the odds are greatly against me. I might not win this fight, but for the sake of every disabled person who has had similar experiences, I must try to make my voice heard despite how uncomfortable or disadvantaged I am. This case involves dealing with a financially and legally empowered opponent who is the perpetrator of the discrimination I have experienced. Morally speaking, this is a David versus Goliath comparison of legal struggle. Nevertheless, I want to pursue this case as being passive in this manner will lead to further short-term discrimination against me as well as a long-term silencing and erosion of rights for all disabled people whom I am attempting to protect. I appeal to all: companies, organizations, political associations and certainly my fellow citizens in the most heartfelt and passionate manner that I am able to assist in funding me a sum of £50,000 so that I am able to build a comprehensive case against my opponent. This amount is necessary as substantial finances are required to fill the gaps in legal proceedings and pay for the required assistance on the part of a qualified lawyer. Additionally, if I am able to achieve this and I am left with unused funding at the end of the legal battle, I will donate all the remaining capital to organisations helping people like myself who cannot afford to defend themselves as a means of enforcing the rights of all disabled people.
Situational context
I am a 33-year-old T6 paraplegic living in Scotland, a country which I have come to love. I am bound to use a wheelchair in order to perform everyday tasks as I am unable to stand, much less walk. Every day I experience toilsome, unexplainable pain relayed by my peripheral nerves which I have endured for many years. Despite this, I have an unquenchable deal of travelling and experiencing the wonders of life. I have always tried to be a positive person, seeing the beneficial aspects of life and trying to make the world a better place by fighting against all forms of injustice. Although I have suffered trauma which many are not able to tolerate, I have carried on courageously for it to not restrict continuing to be satisfied and indeed happy with my life. Returning to the topic, those of you who follow me will know I have experienced disability discrimination regarding my access to public transport two times previously on record, but it has happened once more and thus I have finally decided to take legal action. It is impossible for me to do this alone, and this is precisely why I am seeking your financial and indeed moral support in protecting the rights of one of the most disenfranchised and neglected groups of people in the world, the disabled.
My situation is complicated, and to many, it may seem insignificant, but for me the triride attachment I use for my wheelchair allows me to move around more easily, as well as disconnect and reconnect the device at appropriate times when necessary to adapt. In spite of this being a necessity and a device which is flexible and detachable in all situations, the conductor of the train which I was attempting to board had restricted and barred me from using transport which was my only affordable and able means of returning home. This is a clear-cut case of discrimination and intolerability of people like me who simply cannot operate vital actions of everyday life without such assistance. With these attachable devices, I am able to: pick up medicine, see my friends and conduct numerous other tasks. Of course, there is an ambulance service which may transport me to certain destinations, but not only is this a waste of taxpayer money, but it also takes away important time from qualified medical professionals who could be assisting individuals who are in need of such services. In my case, the conductor(s) wilfully chose to ignore my necessities with complete disregard for my medical condition albeit with my full cooperation, attempting to inform them and work with them appropriately. As a result, this third and hopefully final act of discrimination has produced a deep desire in me to employ a legal battle against ScotRail to forever solidify the rights of disabled people in being able to use transport, no matter their conditions or needs.
Concluding Statement
Recognising all the struggles I have overcome, henceforth there is one more. My desire for justice as I have said previously is not isolated to myself, with this court case I intend to solidify the undeniably reasonable rights of all disabled people in Great Britain, of which there are 14 million of us. I hope that everyone is able to support me in this fight, both my disabled companions around the world as well as every able-bodied person who sympathises with my cause. Legal battles are always expensive matters, and it is why I need not just the help of people in the UK, but the whole globe to achieve closure. I would like to further highlight that the goal of £50,000 is but an estimate. More may be required (it is certainly appreciated) to cover all legal fees. However, if there are funds left over, they will be donated to charities uplifting the rights of disabled people in Scotland as I am attempting to do right now. For the sake of our future children, grandchildren and future generations, please do not allow them to experience the same or even worse discrimination that we have faced in our times. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has read this appeal to action. I implore and wholeheartedly ask those who are in a financially stable position to donate to my cause and assist me in winning this legal battle I will righteously pursue my disabled brethren. Scotland, the UK and the world, you have given me purpose and hope despite my grave struggles. Please do not allow this battle to be in vain, our future depends on it.
For Fairness. For Equality. For Justice.
Yours faithfully,
Ignas Stankevicius.
